Letter 1901, Feb. 26, New York City to Mr. Edwin Markham, Brooklyn / New York Journal. 1901.

They inform Mr. Markham that they are unable to pay more than $60.00 for any poem, without consulting Mr. Hearst. Mr. Hearst is currently out of town. They hope that he will understand and not let this opportunity slip by for financial reasons. They still have one of his poems, "The Reaper", which they will soon print and pay at the same rate. But the Easter poem, they would like it not to run so long so, it would not take up so much of time.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
